Second day, best day
Jambo Friends!! What a sweet day we had. We went to a Kenyan
church service at the catholic church and then proceeded to visit a young girl
supported by Kenya Relief. It was a day full of bumpy roads, dancing, and a
whole lot of Jesus! Joy.
Vivian is a girl supported by Kenya Relief, but at home. She
receives benefits from Kenya Relief but still lives at home with her family.
She is the orphan we visited today. We came in with gifts, her brother Juma
(who lives at Kenya Relief), and a whole lot of love. While visiting her we ran
into young children with horrible upper respiratory tract infections. I would
probably take a wild guess and say RSV was rampant amongst these kids. Snot
covered their faces and wheezing was heard on every breath. My heart was breaking.
So lets take a side note and mention one of the biggest
blessings I have here in Kenya. Brittany is a pharmacy student at Union
University in Tennessee and is staying the whole month with me as well. She is
so knowledgeable about drugs and we make the perfect team! Thanks Jesus.
Sooo.. back to my story. After seeing these sweet sick
children, we had to do something. So me and Britt grabbed our bags and headed
dowtown to find a pharmacy. Two white girls, walking down the busy streets of
downtown Migori was a sight…. Let me tell you. But nonetheless we found a
pharmacy and began our search. We found a broad spectrum antibiotic, a
decongestant, and our attempt at a nebulizer failed. Some medicine was better
than none, atleast that is the case in Kenya.
Trecking back to the home was difficult. The roads were
uneven, streets are packed, and people are constantly staring. But I have never
felt more like Jesus in my life. We got back to the house and I knelt down next
to the grandmother. Disabled and elderly she grabbed my hand. With a translator
at my side I explained the medication regime, why we were giving the baby
medication, and what I wanted from her. She was the guardian, she was the only
parent these children had. Her foot was badly mangled… almost resembling a bad
break, but with eager eyes she listened intently. The perfect picture of Jesus.
She sat at my feet like Mary, with a willing spirit was
hungry for knowledge. She
continueally said how much I was blessing her, but the reality was that she was
blessing me. She was changing my heart, she was Jesus in a messy world. She was
a true hero, in every sense of the word.
I want to be like “grandma”, I want to be hungry for Jesus’
teaching, I want to desire more, seek more, learn more. I want to be a Mary, in
a world pushing me to be Martha!
So today I am asking for prayers for a good nights rest,
because tomorrow starts our clinic work and it will be a long day!
Matthew 25: 35-40 says, “ 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty
and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit
me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you
hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing
clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one
of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
