Independent
Independent. What a perfect word to describe these kids.
Maybe self-reliant would be a better description. Whatever way you choose to
say it, these children are that and more.
There are around 6 children under the age of 4 at the
orphanage. Most of which are potty trained, eat on their own, and get to
activities on their own. They act like most of the 8-10 year olds. They know how to take care of
themselves. They fetch water for there baths on their own and can speak near to
perfect English. It is amazing.
Junior, Elvis, Brian, Tom, and Ocampo. 5 beautiful babies
who crave love. These kids amaze me daily at their independent spirit and
ability to care for themselves. When they do need help the older kids step in
and take a parental role. It is beautiful to see the family dynamics amongst
the kids at Kenya Relief. One of the funniest memories was when Brittney was
holding Brian and one of the kids came up to her and said “he is dirty”.
Brittany’s jaw dropped and the older boy looked at her and said “I will take
him.” Love it!
These kids are amazing and I love watching them interact
with one another on a daily basis. The new kids are welcomed and Emmuel and
Soloman are the best with them. They always take them by the hand and direct
them to their next activity. It is precious.
After a long day we ended with a movie night once again.
This time Frozen. What a joy to hear 99 Kenyan babies sing in unison to “Let it
go”. Gives me chills every time. One of my favorites, Byron was not having a
good day yesterday so I tried to cheer him up any chance I got. After the movie
was over he came up to me and said, “Goodnight Hannah, Anakupenda.” Which
translates to “I love you!”
Now you know why this place is a little glimpse of heaven
and each smile a little bit of Jesus!
Sunday morning came and brought on a whole new definition of
hard work. We unloaded close to 500 33 lb boxes of food into the storage shed.
The kids made an assembly line and carried each box on their head before
reaching the destination. It was hard work but it was the perfect example of
Christ and His body. Working together as one to get a task done. The boys make
me laugh because they love saying my name any chance they get. “Hannah, you
take”, “Hannah, play”, “Hannah, eat”, “Hannah, catch me.”
What a joy.
Sorry mom, but I never want to leave!! I will say though that
the kids found a picture of my family and asked when they were coming to see
them. I told them soon. Sooooo, mom, dad, and jack, pack your bags. It’s time
for yall to come to Kenya!
Goodbye for now!
-Hannah
